BaseCamp athlete Tom Gosnell shared his experience at the 2025 Tour de Scottsdale metric century in Arizona.

I rode the Tour de Scottsdale 100k race this past Saturday. I can say with certainty that participation in BaseCamp has made me stronger. This was my first race of the season, and I had two main goals:
Finish under 3:15:00
Limit the amount of stopped time
I was very happy with my performance relative to these goals based on the following results:
Chip time: 3:09:55 (19.7 mph)
Moving time: 3:08:18 (19.8 mph)
Stopped time: 0:01:37 (14 seconds spent at a traffic stop; 1:23 spent at an aid station for water and electrolyte bottle refill)
The Tour de Scottsdale's categories use age on the day of the event. I fell into the 61-70 category where I finished 48/300, but I was the first 70 year-old to finish. I am happy with that.
Analyzing my ride data, I found that I had an all-time high 90-minute power, besting the 90-minute power I achieved in the 2011 Mt. Lemmon hill climb. Thank you BaseCamp. That 90-minute power was achieved in the first half of the ride. I had a noticeable power drop-off in the second half of the ride, which I think is at least partly due to poor nutrition and hydration. This is something I need to work on.
I have learned so much from BaseCamp this past winter. Armed with the knowledge gained I am confident that I can continue to improve.
